My sister and I lost our dad today. Although it’s been a long time coming and we’re grateful that his suffering is over, it’s surreal. He taught us more than any class ever could. He showed us what a man should be. He was the definition of class. I’m so happy that in his last four years he was able to see his daughters clean, sober, and genuinely happy. My sister was able to fly out to see him to say goodbye. Sober. I’m able to spend the day with our mom. Sober. We’ll be able to process the entire thing and get through. Sober. If I’d been drinking I would’ve just started to drink even more to “help me cope”. That would’ve just extended the grief and made me feel worse for when I actually felt it. No one could depend on us drunk. So today if you’re struggling to not drink, think of us. Your people need you just as much as you need them. Now you can show up for others AND yourself. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.
