Independence day

I don’t mean the alcohol abuse our dad would yell if we left just a swig of a drink. I mean the abuse my body, mind, and spirit took on every single day. I was never at peace. Serenity seemed to be for monks or yogis, not someone like me. I was always recovering from my last drunk or planning my next. Anyone who says alkies are lazy can think again. We spent more hours somewhat keeping our shit together on the outside so no one could see how bad it really was. At least my sis and I did. I’m at ease today in my body and mind. I can’t fathom going back to that uneasy way of life. Finally I have independence from that deadly liquid. Happy fourth, sober family! Keep it simple today.
