Break the cycle

Family
So many of my childhood memories involve alcohol. Not of my sister or me drinking it (yet) but of the adults in our family and their friends imbibing. Every occasion seemed to be lubricated with adult beverages. Our dad has traveled to so many countries and always came home with bottles he’d been gifted. Vodka from Russia for shots, Cachaca (a distilled spirit made from sugarcane juice) from Brazil for caipirinhas, Krupnik (a sweet alcoholic drink from a grain spirit) from Poland, Aguardiente (a distilled liquor made from sugar cane resembling brandy) from Columbia, and many, many more. We had a bar in our house, a whole separate fridge for beer, and a stocked pool house because heaven forbid we have to leave the pool to go get a drink. As we got older, we were expected to be able to drink like our dad. He hazed us in good fun and would yell “Alcohol Abuse!” if we didn’t finish a beer so we were professionals by our teenage years at knocking ’em back and asking for more. We have alcoholics on just about every branch of our family tree. Both sides. That’s nothing to shake a stick at. Several family members have died from complications related to alcohol use disorder and the rest of us just kept drinking. Until we couldn’t. The fact is, we had to stop blowing up our lives and the lives around us before we became just two more Cox’s who died of wet brain or liver failure. Our family supports us in our alcohol free lives and I think it’s helped some look at their own relationships with the toxic liquids our society is surrounded by. We hope to break the cycle of addiction by showing our kids how beautiful life is…without a drink
