Have you ever been in a relationship that seemed too good to be true? And then their true colors started to show? That was me with alcohol. It’s been me with a couple of guys too, ngl. The honeymoon phase is so nice, though, and I can focus on that all day long. The honeymoon period with alcohol was fabulous. I got drunk with a bunch of friends, partied all night, and woke up in the morning with memories I’ll never forget. For me, those days were a few decades ago. At the end of my drinking there was no way i was able to romanticize it. Nothing good came after a night (or day) of drinking for me. I gave up everything that used to make me happy. Sunshine? Nah…I’ll close the blinds so no one can see what I’m up to. Exercise? How could you expect that?! I was too drunk or too hungover to even think the word exercise. Paying bills, grocery shopping, going to work, gassing up my car, taking the dog to the vet…every one of these things used to fall by the wayside when I was actively drinking or actively recovering from a binge. Ads for alcohol are everywhere. Stores for buying it are everywhere. People who are drinking are everywhere. It’s all up to me what I do with that. I can join them or I can cruise on by. Today I choose to cruise. I’ve been warned enough by past events to even think that if I take a drink today my world won’t slowly implode. Happy Wednesday, sober family! Keep it simple today.
